Unspeakable

I imagine what it would be like to talk to Jasmine. I wonder how my voice would sound. Probably like a gate with rusted hinges - creaky and stiff. Perhaps I've neglected it so long it's rotted away, and I'll never be able to use it again.

Unspeakable  has a really interesting blurb that immediately drew me in. A main character that doesn't speak? How is she going to narrate the story?

Unspeakable is the gorgeously written novel telling the story of Megan.
Megan doesn’t speak. She hasn't spoken in months. Pushing away the people she cares about is just a small price to pay. Because there are things locked inside Megan’s head – things that are screaming to be heard – that she cannot, must not, let out.  But Megan is scared of finding her voice, because finding her voice would only mean one thing. The truth. Then Jasmine starts at school: bubbly, beautiful, talkative Jasmine. And for reasons Megan cant quite understand, life starts to look a bit brighter. Megan would love to speak again, and it seems like Jasmine might be the answer. But if she finds her voice, will she lose everything else? Some secrets are too dangerous to be told.

Abbie Rushton did an amazing job telling Megan’s story. Looking through Megan’s eyes and reading her thoughts were outstanding and absolutely heartbreaking.
This book deals with difficult issues, like sexuality and bullying, guilt and being an outsider. All are dealt with so much integrity and maturity and work so well together in this story. Unspeakable has these underlining factors that it tackles, as well as the mains plotline of Hana's death and Megan being a mute. It tackles sexuality (I'm not only talking about relationships, here - the topic of calling someone or something 'gay' also comes up), and it tackles bullying (Sadie and Lindsay taunt Megan constantly) - it tackles guilt, it tackles silence. It tells the tale of noise and silence, and the battle between the two.
