The Cruelty

The CrueltyBy: Scott Bergstrom
Location: FIC BERG
Genre: Thriller/ Mystery

“YA Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets The Bourne Identity, with a dash of Homeland.”

When Gwendolyn Bloom realizes that her father has been kidnapped, she has to take matters into her own hands. She traces him from New York City across the dark underbelly of Europe, taking on a new identity to survive in a world of brutal criminal masterminds. As she slowly leaves behind her schoolgirl self, she realizes that she must learn the terrifying truth about herself. To overcome the cruelty she encounters, she must also embrace it.

“There is a body count, but I was more interested in the aspect of a girl figuring out her identity,” Feiwel said. “Other publishers wanted to tone down the violence, but this is a superhero story. That’s why the movies bought it. And I wanted her to get the bad guys. In terms of empowerment, it’s very satisfying.”
Adams said she, too, thought that Gwen would get a lot of leeway from readers because of her mission’s goal. “She’s going to do whatever it takes to save her dad and that was good enough for me,” Adams said. “Kicking butt to save your dad is actually a lot easier for me to swallow than kids killing kids in The Hunger Games.”

"I read for a living, and I was hooked from the first paragraph. This is a remarkably well written book with a strong, unique, kickass heroine. Thrillers that successfully incorporate artful word choice and keen human observation are few and far between; this one masterfully incorporates both into a well-paced, compelling plot. You're never quite sure where Gwendolyn will go next, but you know you want to be there."- Maya- Goodreads.com

As Maisie discovers how much her looks did and didn't shape her relationship to the world, she has to redefine her own identity, and figure out what 'lucky' really means.

"This is a brilliant story of identity, friendship, and acceptance. The writing was quick and easy, with short chapters keeping the story moving at a great pace." Kate

"What I loved most about this book was that it's main message was 'Love Yourself'. Maisie has a terrible accident and as a result, has to have a face transplant. She has to deal with having someone else's nose, chin, cheeks and her own massive scars. She literally isn't the same person on the outside. At the Edge: Riding for My Life

30052267By: Danny MacAskill
Location: NF 796.60 MAC
Genre: Action man extraordinaire

I have spent many hours with the boys in my life watching this guy do crazy things on a bike, I appear to be disinteretsed but You p watch every minute- then I ban them eternally from trying ANY of this stuff on their bikes or unicycle! You probably can't do most of this on a unicycle- but I am sure Danny would try! This guy is crazy- but oh so entertaining and an incredible athlete who rides in stunning places!
This is his story...

I checked my balance and peered apprehensively at the sheer drop below. Once I felt comfortable, I radioed down to Stu.

'I'm just gonna unclip quickly,' I said.

My walkie-talkie crackled straight away. Stu sounded pretty stressed. 'Dude, keep the rope on!'

I edged forward, my hands and feet scoping out the summit for any loose rock. The ridge pinnacle was still only a meter wide, if that, but I felt pretty stable.

'This bit's fine,' I said. 'The rope makes it harder for me...'

The cyclist is legendary for his YouTube viral videos like The Ridge, Cascadia and Imaginate: nerve-racking montages of stunts which scale everything from mountain peaks, rooftops, ghost towns and movie sets. His life is one of thrills, bloody spills and millions of online hits.

It hasn't been an easy ride. Doubt, stress and the 'what if?' factor circle every trailblazing trick, which require imagination, fearlessness, groundbreaking techniques and an eye for a good camera angle. He has spent his life pushing the extremes; somehow, he's still around to tell the tale.

In this unflinching memoir of mayhem, Danny shares his anarchic childhood on the Isle of Skye and early days as a street trials rider, takes us behind the scenes of his training and videos, shares never-seen-before sketches from his personal notebook, and reveals what it takes to go the next level - both mentally and physically.

Join Danny for a nerve-shredding ride. Just be sure to bring a crash helmet.

The Serpent King

25775743By: Jeff Zentner
Location: FIC ZEN
Genre: Young Adult- Mental illness

“If you're going to live, you might as well do painful, brave, and beautiful things.”

A dark, southern gothic novel about small-town dreams, love and grief.

Dill's father is in jail for an unspeakable crime. Shunned by the neighbours in their small religious Tennessee town, Dill and his mother try to make ends meet.

Dill’s only respite from poverty and prejudice are his two friends: Lydia and Travis. Travis is an oddball, finding sanctuary from his violent father in his obsession with an epic fantasy saga. Lydia is fast-talking and fiercely creative, pinning her hopes on her achingly cool fashion blog. Dill fears his heart will break when she escapes to a better life in New York.

Dill wants to get through his final year of high school in one piece. But there’s a dark secret at the heart of his family, a serpent poisoning his blood, filling him with despair. Dill must confront this legacy of madness and desperation before it tears him apart.

"This book introduces three young adults coming of age in a gripping tale set in a rural small town in Forrestville, Tennessee. Dillard Early, Jr., a talented musician, is the son of almost fanatically religious parents, his father being a former pastor and now a convicted criminal. His mother blames him for the imprisonment of his father, and sharing the same name with his father and grandfather, both having earned a negative reputation in their town, doesn't improve matters for Dill. Lydia Blankenship feels as if she was born into the wrong hometown; because as much as she loves her parents (and is loved in return), she never felt welcome in Forrestville and rather seeks to discover huge, adventurous metropolises like New York City. Running a famous fashion blog with thousands of followers, Lydia finds comfort in the support of virtual friends. Travis Bohannon is a gentle and caring guy who doesn't exactly have the perfect body weight and who is obsessed with an epic fantasy series called Bloodfall, which Jeff Zentner manages to characterize so well that it almost feels like a series one would like to read too. Travis struggles with finding a place in his family, especially as his abusive father has turned into a notorious drunkard after Travis' older brother's death.
We have a fantasy fanboy, a social media celebrity and a criminal's son caught between tradition and the modern world - a motif which continues to be visible throughout the entire novel. Religion and music are explored in very surprising ways, just as the contrast between small-town life and urban pace plays heavily into the story. In the beginning of the novel, Dill, Lydia and Travis were just some random teenagers yet another author attempted to write a story about, but in the end, those three people have turned into good friends. Of course they are fictional characters, but sometimes you just wish those fictional characters could be made of flesh and blood and living in your own hometown." Counsillor- Goodreads.com

Whisper to me

26036953By: Nick Lake
Location: FIC LAK
Genre: Mental Health- Youth Fiction

It’s weird. I’m writing this to you, and you haven’t walked into my life yet. But I guess you already know when you first saw me.
It’s like a wood in ancient Greece, a leafy glade. I’m here, and the voice is here—the echo—and we’re just waiting for you, for the real action to start.
Which is soon.
Things are going to go fast from here.
Are you ready?
Cassie is writing a letter to the boy whose heart she broke. She’s trying to explain why. Why she pushed him away. Why her father got so angry when he saw them together. Why she disappears some nights. Why she won’t let herself remember what happened that long-ago night on the boardwalk. Why she fell apart so completely.

Desperate for his forgiveness, she’s telling the whole story of the summer she nearly lost herself. She’s hoping he’ll understand as well as she now does how love—love for your family, love for that person who makes your heart beat faster, and love for yourself—can save you after all

"Whisper to Me is one of those special books that will stay with you long after you put it down. Nick Lake paints a vivid picture of grief and a teen girl's fall into the depths of mental illness. From the first page, Lake captured my attention with Cassie's distinct voice and thrilled me with the story's unique blend of mystery, thriller, and first love. This book is a character study, focusing on human connection and self-acceptance. A candid account of how grief can wreak havoc on one's mind and how it can break down one's ability to connect to others and even to yourself. Each character was multi-faceted and layered, even if they played a small role. I really loved "You" and his unwitting desire to help the girl with a thousand secrets. He was pure and good and had his own set of problems.

What made this book stand out among all other books that speak on mental illness is just how respectful Nick Lake deals with the subject. He doesn't try to romanticize it or let the love story side of things put a band aid or fix Cassie's problems. The portrayal of Cassie's unraveling is honest and real. Even though I've never gone through anything like that, the careful and intentional way Lake handled the subject matter made me feel Cassie's struggles deeply.

Genre:  Biography- science- genius

Elon Musk: How the Billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla is Shaping our Future

This book needs to be read by anyone who wants to know what our future is going to look like- why? Because this guy is creating it!

South African born Elon Musk is the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. Musk wants to save our planet; he wants to send citizens into space, to form a colony on Mars; he wants to make money while doing these things; and he wants us all to know about it. He is the real-life inspiration for the Iron Man series of films starring Robert Downey Junior.

The personal tale of Musk’s life comes with all the trappings one associates with a great, drama-filled story. He was a freakishly bright kid who was bullied brutally at school, and abused by his father. In the midst of these rough conditions, and the violence of apartheid South Africa, Musk still thrived academically and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he paid his own way through school by turning his house into a club and throwing massive parties.

He started a pair of huge dot-com successes, including PayPal, which eBay acquired for $1.5 billion in 2002. Musk was forced out as CEO and so began his lost years in which he decided to go it alone and baffled friends by investing his fortune in rockets and electric cars. Meanwhile Musk’s marriage disintegrated as his technological obsessions took over his life ...

Elon Musk is the Steve Jobs of the present and the future, and for the past twelve months, he has been shadowed by tech reporter, Ashlee Vance. Elon Musk: How the Billionaire CEO of Spacex and Tesla is Shaping our Future is an important, exciting and intelligent account of the real-life Iron Man

The Hate U Give

By: Angie Thomas
32613366
Location: FIC THO
Genre: Real life stuff- the hard yards- a book that truel matters!

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

"Stunning"- John Green

"The truth casts a shadow over the kitchen—people like us in situations like this become hashtags, but they rarely get justice. I think we all wait for that one time though, that one time when it ends right.
Maybe this can be it."

"There are those books that are important and timely, worthy of reading because of the social and/or political message that they send. They fill a gap in the market; they make waves. They need to exist. And there are other books that are well-written, emotionally-charged and unputdownable - books that are not important as such, just really good. But, on occasion, you find one of those rare wonderful creatures that is both important AND really amazingly good. The Hate U Give is one of those books" Emily

Starr Carter is caught between two worlds. When she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, those two worlds collide. Soon protests erupt because her friend was unarmed. The shooting is being brought to attention by the media, and they want to know what really happened with Starr being the only witness. Will she stay silent or will she gather her courage?
Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs.  Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

"This is a Black Lives Matter book. But if it was only a Black Lives Matter book it would be worthy but it would not be alive the way this book is. This is not an after school special, there are many plots and many characters Thomas balances with impressive grace. Nearly everyone Starr interacts with gets a chance to show us who they are, what they mean to Starr, and what place they have in her world. I am trying to remember the last time I read a YA novel with this many fully developed characters and I'm at a loss.

Thomas avoids easy answers. She embraces complexity and nuance. And, honestly, it's a ripping good read. I tore through it, even as it stuck a knife in my heart over and over again.

This is not hype. This is a very real new talent and I can't wait to see what she does next.

“Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights
in this novel, a contemporary YA romance about love—for the unexpected boy, for a new brother, and for yourself. First & Then comes from Emma Mills, the YouTube vlogger and co-creator of the popular "life skills" channel, "How to Adult" which currently has over 160,000 subscribers.

Devon Tennyson wouldn't change a thing. She's happy watching Friday night games from the bleachers, silently crushing on best friend Cas, and blissfully ignoring the future after high school. But the universe has other plans. It delivers Devon's cousin Foster, an unrepentant social outlier with a surprising talent for football, and the obnoxiously superior and maddeningly attractive star running back, Ezra, right where she doesn't want them - first into her P.E. class and then into every other aspect of her life.

“A thousand electric cars could run on how you feel when you know that the person you like likes you back. It feels incredible. Like it shouldn't be possible. Of all the happy coincidences to ever exist, it's one of the happiest.

"I loved this book much more than I expected. Sarcastic characters, a unique family, hate-to-love relationship, sports, great sibling relationship, funny dialogues - Everything I want a book to have. And it made me cry for God's sake. I rarely cry and this one made me both cry and laugh out loud."Nora

The Everything Box

28595032By: Richard Kadrey
Location: FIC KAD
Genre: Fantasy
Series: (Another Coop Heist #1)

a dark and humorous story involving a doomsday gizmo, a horde of baddies determined to possess its power, and a clever thief who must steal it back . . . again and again.

"The first in the "Coop Heist" series sets up a more humorous take on magic and the supernatural in the modern world as a thief with magical immunity is tasked multiple times to steal a box that holds the apocalypse or something along those lines. Looking for the box are various cultists, government agents, mobsters, zombies, demons, and an angel or two." Tom

22000 B.C. A beautiful, ambitious angel stands on a mountaintop, surveying the world and its little inhabitants below. He smiles because soon, the last of humanity who survived the great flood will meet its end, too. And he should know. He’s going to play a big part in it. Our angel usually doesn’t get to do field work, and if he does well, he’s certain he’ll get a big promotion.

And now it’s time . . . .

The angel reaches into his pocket for the instrument of humanity’s doom. Must be in the other pocket. Then he frantically begins to pat himself down. Dejected, he realizes he has lost the object. Looking over the Earth at all that could have been, the majestic angel utters a single word.

“Crap.”

2015. A thief named Coop—a specialist in purloining magic objects—steals and delivers a small box to the mysterious client who engaged his services. Coop doesn’t know that his latest job could be the end of him—and the rest of the world. Suddenly he finds himself in the company of The Department of Peculiar Science, a fearsome enforcement agency that polices the odd and strange. The box isn’t just a supernatural heirloom with quaint powers, they tell him.

It’s a doomsday device. They think . . .

And suddenly, everyone is out to get it.

“So, you’re the angel of Death?” The angel shook his head, a little embarrassed. “I don’t have that honor. In Heaven, I’m the celestial who bears the great golden quills, the silver Chroma, the holy vellums upon which the Lord God inscribes the fate of the universe.” Tiras’s eyes narrowed. “You’re in charge of office supplies. You’re the angel of office supplies.”

― Brenda Drake, Thief of Lies

Teleporting into the Paris library and the premise of being able to jump to libraries around the world through magical books, protected by magical knights against magical and demonic creatures, with skilful wizards on both sides!
YES PLEASE!

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren't busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

A Tragic Kind of Wonderful

34212966By: Eric Lindstrom
Location: FIC LIN
Genre: Young Adult- - Mental Health

In A Tragic Kind of Wonderful, Eric Lindstrom, author of the critically acclaimed Not If I See You First, examines the fear that keeps us from exposing our true selves, and the courage it takes to be loved for who we really are.

In the vein of It's Kind of a Funny Story and All the Bright Places, comes a captivating, immersive exploration of life with mental illness.

For sixteen-year-old Mel Hannigan, bipolar disorder makes life unpredictable. Her latest struggle is balancing her growing feelings in a new relationship with her instinct to keep everyone at arm's length. And when a former friend confronts Mel with the truth about the way their relationship ended, deeply buried secrets threaten to come out and upend her shaky equilibrium.

As the walls of Mel's compartmentalized world crumble, she fears the worst--that her friends will abandon her if they learn the truth about what she's been hiding. Can Mel bring herself to risk everything to find out?

I like how Larry from Goodreads describes this book:

A Tragic Kind of Wonderful is beautiful, heartbreaking, and so accurate in its portrayal of the many shades of bipolar disorder. Eric Lindstrom so perfectly captured Mel's voice through her ups and downs (the downs, which manifest them as ups, are eerie and so candidly portrayed), and how each person in her family deals with her condition. The book also captured the teenage attitude and dialogue without being overly precocious—you can hear these characters saying the things they do in the book without wondering if there really are 25-year-olds inside of them.

This is a book about realizing your problems are too big for only you to handle them, and the importance of trusting people and letting them in, but at the same time recognizes the value and necessity of self-protection. It's a book about letting ourselves feel, and not being afraid to admit how and when we're hurting. And this is an important book for those struggling to understand just what mental illness can do to a person.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

Genre: Young Adult Tragicomedy

When Jared Stone discovers that he has terminal brain cancer, he decides to sell his life to the highest bidder on eBay. He gains the attention of a nun, a psychologically-disturbed man of leisure and wealth, a video-game playing teen, and a TV producer. When his posting is pulled down on eBay, only one person is left, the TV producer. So Jared and his family become the focus of a reality TV show and lose their privacy entirely. Jackie, Jared’s 15-year-old daughter, will not willingly participate in the show, figuring out how to avoid the crew and the cameras. But perhaps there is even more that she can do as she starts her own behind-the-scenes YouTube show that tells the truth about the editing and manipulation of her family by the reality show.- Tasha

Fifteen-year-old Jackie Stone is a prisoner in her own house. Everything she says and does 24/7 is being taped and broadcast to every television in America. Why? Because her dad is dying of a brain tumor and he has auctioned his life on eBay to the highest bidder: a ruthless TV reality show executive at ATN.

Gone is her mom's attention and cooking and parent-teacher conferences. Gone is her sister's trust ever since she's been dazzled by the cameras and new-found infamy. Gone is her privacy. Gone is the whole family's dignity as ATN twists their words and makes a public mockery of their lives on Life and Death. But most of all, Jackie fears that one day very soon her father will just be . . . gone. Armed only with her ingenuity and the power of the internet, Jackie is determined to end the show and reclaim all of their lives, even in death.

Told through multiple points of view--including her dad's tumor--acclaimed author Len Vlahos deftly explores what it really means to live in this brilliantly written tragicomedy

Cyber Espionage...
Hackers...
Government survelliance

Combining the scientific-based, propulsive narrative style of Michael Crichton with the eerie atmosphere and conspiracy themes of The X-Files and the imaginative, speculative edge of Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, Zer0es explores our deep-seated fears about government surveillance and hacking in an inventive fast-paced novel sure to earn Chuck Wendig the widespread acclaim he deserves.

An Anonymous-style rabble rouser, an Arab spring hactivist, a black-hat hacker, an old-school cipherpunk, and an online troll are each offered a choice: go to prison or help protect the United States, putting their brains and skills to work for the government for one year.

But being a white-hat doesn’t always mean you work for the good guys. The would-be cyberspies discover that behind the scenes lurks a sinister NSA program, an artificial intelligence code-named Typhon, that has origins and an evolution both dangerous and disturbing. And if it’s not brought down, will soon be uncontrollable.

Can the hackers escape their federal watchers and confront Typhon and its mysterious creator? And what does the government really want them to do? If they decide to turn the tables, will their own secrets be exposed—and their lives erased like lines of bad code?

“I neither like nor approve of this government.” “But as you note, you are American. Which means this is your government as much as it is mine.” “This government hasn’t been mine in a long time.” One of those types. “You and I are going to have to differ on that point. I say you live here, it’s your government. All the bells and whistles. All the warts and wrinkles.”

Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. The Princess Bride meets Ghost (the movie), with a little hint of The Matrix in there.

I have been trying to get this book for  a year or so, I just loved the cover, and finally I have managed to get a copy into our library. It is a stunning looking book inside and out- and the story....

"A unique story that has the nostalgic feeling of a beloved fairytale. I was immediately sunk into this book from page one. There is comedy, romance, adventure, action, magic, ghosts, what's not to love? If that doesn't sound like a great book to you, you are dead wrong. I read it so fast that it felt short but it's a decent size novel. I just fell so in love with the plot and the characters, I just wasn't ready for it to be over. It's amazing. "- Brittany

The Passion for Dolssa

I must write this account, and when I have finished, I will burn it.

Buried deep within the archives of a convent in medieval France is an untold story of love, loss, and wonder and the two girls at the heart of it all.

Dolssa is an upper-crust city girl with a secret lover and an uncanny gift. Branded a heretic, she’s on the run from the friar who condemned her mother to death by fire, and wants Dolssa executed, too.

Botille is a matchmaker and a tavern-keeper, struggling to keep herself and her sisters on the right side of the law in their seaside town of Bajas.

When their lives collide by a dark riverside, Botille rescues a dying Dolssa and conceals her in the tavern, where an unlikely friendship blooms. Aided by her sisters and Symo, her surly but loyal neighbor, Botille nurses Dolssa back to health and hides her from her pursuers. But all of Botille’s tricks, tales, and cleverness can’t protect them forever, and when the full wrath of the Church bears down upon Bajas, Dolssa’s passion and Botille’s good intentions could destroy the entire village.

The Journey

28818766By: Francesca Sanna
Location: PIC SAN
Genre:A real story- to real

This picture book left me silent. Mad. Sad. Angry. Hopeful. Frustrated. Determined!
Picture books speak, they tell complex stories simply. They make us reflect deeply within 50 pages often more than what a 320 page novel can..Maybe it is the combo of print  and art that illicit deep reactions from within.
Whatever it is- it works!

From the author: The Journey is actually a story about many journeys, and it began with the story of two girls I met in a refugee center in Italy. After meeting them I realized that behind their journey lay something very powerful. So I began collecting more stories of migration and interviewing many people from many different countries. A few months later, in September 2014, when I started studying a Master of Arts in Illustration at the Academy of Lucerne, I knew I wanted to create a book about these true stories. Almost every day on the news we hear the terms "migrants" and "refugees" but we rarely ever speak to or hear the personal journeys that they have had to take. This book is a collage of all those personal stories and the incredible strength of the people within them.Image result for 9781909263994

Ninth City Burning

30763911By: J.Patrick Black
Location: FIC BLA
Genre: Aliens/SciFi/Dystopic

For fans of Ender s Game, Red Rising, and The Hunger Games comes an explosive, epic science fiction debut...

“I shouldn't be surprised―filtering the facts to present the rosiest possible picture is part of human nature―but I am.”

Cities vanished, gone in flashes of world-shattering destruction. An alien race had come to make Earth theirs, bringing a power so far beyond human technology it seemed like magic. It was nearly the end of the world until we learned to seize the power, and use it to fight back.
The war has raged for five centuries. For a cadet like Jax, one of the few who can harness the enemy s universe-altering force, that means growing up in an elite military academy, training for battle at the front and hoping he is ready. For Naomi, young nomad roaming the wilds of a ruined Earth, it means a daily fight for survival against the savage raiders who threaten her caravan.
When a new attack looms, these two young warriors find their paths suddenly intertwined. Together with a gifted but reckless military commander, a factory worker drafted as cannon fodder, a wild and beautiful gunfighter, and a brilliant scientist with nothing to lose they must find a way to turn back the coming invasion, or see their home finally and completely destroyed."
(less)

"My favorite thing about Ninth City Burning is the slow start and the constant build up to what is the truth and what is a myth. Black leaves a lot for readers to discover with the help of seven important characters along the way. You will go into the novel not knowing a lot, and will be partially confused at times. Trust me, it is completely worth it, and the pay off in the end is enormous. This has turned into my unquestionable favorite read of 2016, so far! I have high expectations for the rest of the series, which is supposed to contain at least two more books. Warning… the math, science, and technology in this book will blow your mind. Black explains everything so well that you will begin to believe that thelemity is real" Austin

Heartless

32179294By: Melissa Meyer
Location: FIC MEY
Genre:  Fantasy-Retelling

“When pleased, I beat like a drum. When sad, I break like glass. Once stolen, I can never be taken back. What am I?”
― Marissa Meyer, Heartless

A girl who has a talent for cooking magical confections that can alter a person's emotions catches the eye of the King of Hearts, who wants her for his bride. She will do anything to avoid this fate, particularly as she finds herself falling in love with the mysterious new court jester...

Heartless is an epic retelling of Alice in Wonderland, with the focus being on The Queen of Hearts.   Its hard to imagine Catherine, who just wanted to open a bakery and fall in love, would ever become the short-tempered, unpredictable Queen of Hearts we all know.
Old characters, like the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat, appear with extra additions of Meyer's own invention

"I did not expect to enjoy Heartless as much as I did. I did not expect to warm up so much to this girl in the habit of dreaming too much, for whom hoping is an illness, for whom burying her hands in a ball of dough is the ultimate happiness. I warmed up to her so much my heart had got as cold as hers as the conclusion drew near, and by the end of it, it didn't even seem to be beating anymore.
I wonder if I will ever be able to claim it back."-

Carve the Mark

30233110By: Veronica Roth
Location: FIC ROT
Genre: Fantasy- SciFi- Dystopia- The lot!!!!
Series: #1- Carve the Mark

AUTHOR OF DIVERGENT!!

In a galaxy powered by the current, everyone has a gift

“I am a Shotet. I am sharp as broken glass, and just as fragile. I tell lies better than I tell truths. I see all of the galaxy and never catch a glimpse of it.”

This book is a tad controversial, the book has racial undertones, the author's allusion to chronic pain as a source of strength for one of the characters is another problematic issue.

"After the roller coaster of the last several years with the Black Lives Matter movement, the systematic oppression of Muslims, and the discussions I have had and read, I'm finding myself more and more sensitive to the plights of those who are oppressed. I want to give those people a voice rather than reinforce harmful views." Meg

So apart from the issues what is this book about?

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power — something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get this brother out alive — no matter what the cost.
The Akos is thrust into Cyra's world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?
Carve the Mark is Veronica Roth's stunning portrayal of the power of friendship — and love — in a galaxy filled with unexpected gifts
